Gerard Byrne
Gerard trained as an actor at The Gaiety School of Acting and the Brendan Smith Theatre Academy. He also holds a BA in Modern Languages and Literature.
Early on he worked with the Passion Machine Theatre Company in productions including HOME, WAR, STUDS, BROWNBREAD, and THE BIRDTABLE, written and directed by Brendan Gleeson.
He is recently completed filming the role of General Groves in History Channel series TITANS and the feature film THE HOLY ISLAND directed by Robert Manson.
Most recently he appeared in the role of 'Professor Fleming' in MISS SCARLET AND THE DUKE for A+E Studios opposite Kate Phillps. On stage Gerard most recently appeared in the role of Claudius in the Mill Production of HAMLET directed by Geoff O'Keefe. He also recently appeared in the role of Pozzo in WAITING FOR GODOT directed by Patrick Sutton at Smock Alley Theatre.
Other recent stage credits include Bitter Like a Lemon's production of IN OUR VEINS at The Abbey Theatre on The Peacock Stage directed by Maisie Lee, Jimmy Murphy's BROTHERS OF THE BRUSH directed by Tracy Ryan for Verdant Productions at the Viking Theatre, season 2 of ITV's THE FRANKENSTEIN CHRONICLES, INSPEKTOR JURY 4 - OLD FOX DECEIV'D directed by Marcus Ulbricht for ZDF Germany and Lynda Radley's FUTUREPROOF directed by Tom Creed for the Everyman Palace Theatre, Cork.
Further theatre credits include the role of Colonel Pickering in PYGMALION, directed by Liam Halligan for Smock Alley Theatre, YOU NEVER CAN TELL directed by Conall Morrison, THE SHADOW OF A GUNMAN directed by Wayne Jordan, both with the Abbey Theatre, BORSTAL BOY directed by Conall Morrisson for Verdant Productions at the Gaiety Theatre, MAJOR BARBARA directed by Annabelle Comyn, Richard Dormer's DRUM BELLY directed by Seán Holmes, and THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY directed by Neil Bartlett (these last three all at the Abbey Theatre).
Gerard has also appeared in co-productions with the Abbey at the Barbican for the RSC and at the Royal National Theatre. He has appeared at both the Edinburgh Fringe and Edinburgh International Festivals, at the Bonner Biennale Festival in Germany and at l’Imaginaire Irlandais Festival at the Théatre de l’Europe in Paris.
Screen credits include AFTER directed by Seán Branigan, and NOREEN, a short film with Brendan and Brian Gleeson, directed by Domhnall Gleeson, BEFORE I SLEEP (Brother Films), CRUSHPROOF (Continent Films GmbH), AFTER MIDNIGHT (Channel 4 Films), THE SNAPPER (BBC Films), THE TRUTH ABOUT CLAIRE (RTE), and A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEBT (Radharc).
For a number of years Gerard played the role of “Malachy” in the RTE series FAIR CITY. He has also performed in a number of radio plays for RTE and BBC Radio 4, the most recent of which was THE HIT LIST, written and directed by John Boorman for RTE.
Gerard is based in Dublin.
